DJ #4 To Kill a Mockingbird Quote 3

"Jem decided there was no point in quibbling, and was silent. When Atticus went inside the house to retrieve a file he had forgotten to take to work that morning, Jem finally realized that he had been done in by the oldest lawyer's trick on record. He waited a respectful distance from the front steps, watched Atticus leave the house and walk toward town. When Atticus was out of earshot Jem yelled after him" 'I thought I wanted to be a lawyer but I aint't so sure now!'" pg. 55

  1. Jem is mad because he was fooled by his father and his response was that he is not sure that he wants to be a lawyer but he was joking around.

  2. (R)The author creates this scene to show that Jem wanted to be more than just a professional football player when he grows up. But now, after having thought it through so briefly, he might give it second thought to just chase his football dreams.

  3. (R) Jem is obviosly a liitle hurt by the fact that he was fooled by a lawyer, his father, which in my opinion i think he is embarassed of. In response to Atticus's 'offense' , Jem decides to play around with the idea of becoming a lawyer knowing that is what his father probably wants him to be by trying to oofend him with that comment. I dont think it really affects Atticus but Jem probably tought that it would make his father think about what he really said.

  4. (R) When someone gets mad or disappointed at themselves. When I get mad with my mom I tell her thing that I don't mean or that I am going to regret later. In this quote Jem has done the exact thing, but he is going to realize later he maybe should't have said that.

  5. (P) I think that Atticus made a smart move and also that Jem would not talk to Atticus for a while because he's mad at him. Also about what he said about the lawyer, his just laying.

  6. Jem and the gang had beeen caught messing with Mr. Radley by Atticus. Atticus chastised Jem and reiterated the thought of him becoming a lawyer. But Jem didnt argue he just simply reconsidered becoming a lawyer. I think Jem is just angry about being caught. He should understand that Atticus is just trying to help him and his future. Im sure later on in the book Jem would start to relize that and reconsider his dream as a lawyer. I also predict that he will also find better ways to have fun than bugging other such as Mr. Radley.

  7. I think this quote shows that Atticus is a very clever man and that he disapproves of making fun of other people. Jem was smart to wait until Atticus couldn't hear him, because although he said he wasn't sure about becoming a lawyer, he really does want to. He was just angry at Atticus for fooling him with such a silly trick.

  9. Jem is angry about getting caught by Atticus, that he doesn't know what he is saying. Jem was just trying to offend Atticus by saying that he thought he wanted to be a lawyer.

  10. (R) From what the author wrote, people hate being fooled. This makes them feel embarrassed and puny to the one he/she was fooled by. This also frustrates them if they were fooled by either the easiest or the oldest trick. From Jem's response after realizing he was humiliated. He's not sure if he even wants to become a lawyer despite the fact he wants to become a football player.

  11. i think that sometimes Jem is wishfully dreaming. so Atticus feels like this is his chance to put him on the right path to success. which leads me to believe that Atticus wants to really see Jem succeed. so he gives him another option that gets Jem thinking of becoming a lawyer.

  12. Since Jem is mad with his dad he said something to him that he knew he wouldn't like to hear. Jem is going to regret what he said to his father just because he was really mad he blurted out some some he didn't supposed to say.
    (P) I think his father is going to be really disappointed but will forgive him when the time is right.

  13. (c) Having read what Jem has done when he got angry when his dad yelled at him ,reminds of what used to do. I use to do the same thing ,yell back at your dad when hes out of range. But then i'll make the mistake of saying to close. That way of dealing with grown ups is similar even if it was that long ago.

  14. Jem is mad at Atticus because he dosent allow him to play a game that he is making fun of Mr. Radley in. So he realizes that he dosent want to grow up and be just like Atticus. He also saw that Atticus fooled him with his lawyer trick which made him upset as well.

  15. I think that what Jem said was just to look like he didn't "lose" to his father. It says that Jem waited until Atticus couldn't hear and then said what he said, so it obviously wasn't meant to hurt his father. This is just Jem trying not to look like a fool around Dill and Scout

  16. Jem is mad because Atticus fooled him with a silly trick, and when people are mad they say things later on they will regret, which this is the case of Jem. Hes mad and he knows that if he says that to Atticus he'll probably be sad.

  18. Jem looks a little disappointed with his father because he got fooled. What he said to his father something that he probably didnt mean to say it. He only said it because he was really angry with his father. I think that he will regret it later on in the book.

  19. its obvious that jem is mad at his father and that's why he said that he might not be so sure of being a lawyer anymore, but i dont think that he means it

  20. I think that when Jem finally realizes that he was fooled by his father he gets disappointed. So after that he then thinks that he doesn't want to become an lawyer to be like his father and then thinks about giving his football career a try again.

  21. he is mad so naturally screams at his father beacuse he got fooled but i think he has respect to his father by not saying directly

  22. Jem is mad because he got fooled by atticus. He really doesnt like that and when he says he doesnt want to be a lawyer no more he says it because he doesnt want to end up or be like his dad. He would rather be the football player he has always wanted to be or at least give it another try.

  23. I think that Jim doesn't want to be a lawyer anymore because he realized that his father fooled him and maybe he didn't really wanted a career as a lawyer and he should try something else that he really want's to do.

  24. In my opinion, i think that he gets fooled by his father so he could realize that on what he was saying about being a lawyer was not his thing and give himself a second chance on football.

  25. jem is very disappointed that he had been fooled by his own father and I don't think hes going to give up on becoming a lawyer.

  26. i think that the author is trying to show that jem is mad because atticus tricked him into telling him what they where really doing and since he was embarrased at the talk he just had with atticus,he waited untill atticus was "out of ear shot " (-meaning atticus could no longer hear ) he says he's not sure he wants to be a lawyer anymore just so he wouldnt look stupid in front of scout and dil,but it wasnt meant to hurt or make his father mad

  27. I think that Jem dosent want to dissapoint his father by being all bad and screaming at him in the face, thats why he said it once he was out of sight. I think Jem wants to make his dad proud of him.

  30. I would be mad too if i feel for one of the oldest moves a lawyer can do. I also thinks that he is mad because he was caught by Atticus. Also because Scout was right a this time.

  31. Jem was mad because he was tricked by his father. He also said that he isn't sure that he wants to be a lawyer now that his father played a trick on him. I think Jem just wants to make his dad happy but like he said that he didn't want to be a lawyer anymore.

  32. Atticus seems to care alot about his children and to see his boy Jem take the same job as him, being a lawyer. But Jem must feel embarrassed about being tricked by his father and is mad at him for the moment

  33. (C) This Quote reminds me of that time in my life when i use to be real scare of my mom and i use to talk back when she was walking away. the bad thing is that sooner or later she would find out and i would get slapped. Jem need to be careful and apply to the consequences.
