DJ #3: Quote 1 To Kill a Mockingbird

"It was then that Calpurnia requested my presence in the kitchen. She was furious, and when she was furious Calpurnia's grammar became erratic. When in tranquility, her grammar was as good as anybody's in Maycomb. Atticus said Calpurnia had more education than most colored folks. When she squinted down at me the tiney lines around her eyes deepended. 'There's some folks who don't like to eat like us,' she whispered firecly, 'but you ain't called on to contradict 'em at the table when they don't." pg. 27

  1. (P) Calpurnia is very respectful specially when it comes to a visitor visiting the house. She wants Scout to be respectful to the Cunninghams so she is going to ask her to say Sorry.

  2. (Q) What made Calpurnia to act this way? Could it possible be that she got use of being like things were before he showed up?

  3. The way the narrator is describing Calpurnia is as a strict person because she don't like when somebody is discriminating another person she found that really offensive. When Calpurnia was really mad she would talk with a really strong grammar that is how you would tell she was mad. A connection between Scout and Calpurnia is that when ever Scout did some Calpurina could always want to give it a really good closely look at her face. I really like that Calpurina has her own way of seeing stuff and that she has an attitude about stuff she don't like thing that are for a bad purpose she like things to be right and good. The words that Calpurina uses when she talks are really clever because she is been respectful to the the person who is not like them and she wont judge anyone.

  4. (E) Calpurnia must be old because she is wrinkly and doesn't have patience...

  5. Scout is trying to say that Calpurnia is a nice and has good grammar, but if you get her furious her grammar becomes erratic and that Calpurnia wanted Scout to apologize to her father.

  6. (Q) Why did Calpurnia act in this manner? Scout is young and she doesn't know much about proper manners and proper actions being shown to the public. Is Calpurnia used to acting like such a proper person? If she was then why did she talk to Scout in that way?

  7. (R) The author tries to make Calpurnia look like a parent figure by constantly scolding and correcting Scouts behavior. this makes Calpurnia seem strong and willing to improve the lives, and cortesy, of both scout and jem as they progress in life and grow up to be something bigger in life.

  8. I can see why Calpurnia acted that way (but not the volume of it) because you must respect everyone especially visitors. Even though I think Calpurnia is right I don't think she should of actually say it in that manner (it is better to understand when someone says respectfully and clearly). Other than I see this midly entertaining I can't help see this as one of my experiences when I was kid. When I was a kid I had a similar moment, I said why a poorly dressed man was outside a restaurant was smelly and the my mom told me not to judge because hes poor and and you shoudn't judge people. Which is very similar to what happend to Scout.

  9. I think Calpurina is right, and i also think that Scout learn a very important thing. Even though Calpurina is strict, I think she can also be a wise woman.

  10. Scout is young and she doesn't know much about manners. (Q)Why did Calpurnia responded this way? If she knows so much about being respectful, then she should have acted differently, not the way she treated Scout. But also i can describe Calpurnia as a respectful person with others, but not so much with Scout. Why?

  11. i agree with calpurina because people shouldn't judge others just because they aren't the same as them

  12. Calpurina is mad so she is saying things she is not suppose to say . Which make her look like she has no manners thats why Atticus said that she has more manners than some people in maycomb. Calpurina in other words is just trying to say that even though they may be different it doesnt mean that they should be treated less than anyone else .

  13. Why is Calpurina acting like this?? How come when she becomes furious her grammar becomes erratic? Im also guessing that Calpurina is old because old people are wrinkly, and impatient.Hopefully her attitude changes very soon..

  14. If calpurnia is nice than why did she speak in that grammar. She should of told scout to apologize in a nice way.If you use a certain type of grammar on a person they are going to react in a certain way.

  15. Calpurnia was probably just mad at that time and that's why she started speaking like that. Scout should understand why she acted like that and how she is a respectful woman with manners.

  16. Calpurnia is disappointed with scout for treating her guest in such a bad manner. She wants to let her know that not all people in maycomb have the same eating habits as her.

  17. I understand why Calpurnia is mad at Scout because of her behavior to the guest. It is good that Calpurnia tells Scout that she needs to have better behavior and manners towards the guest. However,I think Calpurnia shouldn't get very mad at Scout because she is still little and doesn't know all of her manners yet. Also,Calpurnia seems like another person when she gets mad.

  19. Calpurina might be strict and all, but she was just telling him what was right.

  20. Why did scout make Calpurnia this mad? And she was very calm and other people would of flipped out. And was it Scouts intention to make Calpurnia this mad.she also very respectful to anybody.

  21. I agree with Calpurnia because Scout was being rude to Walter. I think Calpurnia was just trying to say that everyone should be respected. Scout was being rude to Walter by asking him personal questions. I think that Calpurnia did right. Scout judged Walter for being a poor farmer.

  22. In my opinion i think that Calpurina got very angry that she began to say things that she didnt suppost to say. By does type of language it proofs that she doesnt have any good manners so i hope that she changes her attitude and her manners.

  23. (E) We know that scout is being disrespectful but why does calpurnia started acting in this manner? Scout is a young child don't get angry at her, just talk to her calmly and talk with her about manners.

  24. Scout and her brother know that if they get cought they are going to get in trouble with Atticus.

  25. i think scout doesnt mean it due to her age. i also can understand calpurina getting mad but still has to keep in mind that she is still at that stage of saying what comes to mind. so the best thing for calpurina is actually to just find out why she says these thing and to let her know its wrong to just disregard manners like that.

  26. Scout is still 6 years old so I guess it is understandable that she would just blurt out her opinion on things. Calpurnia was also right to smack her. She shouldn't have judged a boy who was poorer than her. He is probably already bullied because of his economic status. In my opinion Scout should be taught how to act around people.

  27. (E) Calpurnia is a smart lady, she's a person that doesn't cares how people dress, if their rich or poor, or their skin color, she thinks that everyone should be treated with respect.

  28. She is very educated since there aren't many educated color folk,

but when is is mad/angry her talking no so great

  29. I think that calpurnia did right for getting mad at scout because its not right to judge other people

  30. I think she was on some parts because Scout shouldn't have said some things that she said. I didn't agree how she acted when Scout said that because that was mean of her. I grew up in a different type of family so i don't how to really act at the table because we don't get a a lot of people who visit.

  31. this quote shows how educated calpurna is, compared to other colored folks in this book and it also shows that she has manners and she doesn't like scout judging people just because they don't do things exactly like them and i don't think calpurnia was wrong for what she did because she's showing scout that she was wrong
