DJ #6

For chapters 14 and 15, the reader begins to see another side of Maycomb. Find 3 quotes where you see people's prejudice against others. Find one quote that shows Scout's innocence about what is going on. For each quote remember to add your analysis. What do you learn about Maycomb and what is your opinion about what is happening. Remember to include page numbers and quotation marks. Your analytical responses should be about 5-8 sentences.

Jim Crow Laws

As we read the novel, we are introduced to Tom Robinson. We read an article about the Jim Crow Laws. What are your thoughts? How does this tie in with prejudice? Were the laws fair? What is your opinion about how the South reacted to the 13-15 ammendments? What about the North, what is your opinion about the North knowingly allowing for laws that in essence extended slavery. Your response should be at least 8-15 sentences.

When Atticus went inside the house to retrieve a file he had forgotten to take to work that morning, Jem finally realized that he had been done in by the oldest lawyer's trick on record. He waited a respectful distance from the front steps, watched Atticus leave the house and walk toward town. Our activities halted when any of the neighbors appeared, and once I saw Miss Maudie Atkinson staring across the street at us, her hedge clippers poised in midair." pg. 44

"It was then that Calpurnia requested my presence in the kitchen. She was furious, and when she was furious Calpurnia's grammar became erratic. When in tranquility, her grammar was as good as anybody's in Maycomb. Atticus said Calpurnia had more education than most colored folks. When she squinted down at me the tiney lines around her eyes deepended. 'There's some folks who don't like to eat like us,' she whispered firecly, 'but you ain't called on to contradict 'em at the table when they don't." pg. 27
