For chapters 14 and 15, the reader begins to see another side of Maycomb. Find 3 quotes where you see people's prejudice against others. Find one quote that shows Scout's innocence about what is going on. For each quote remember to add your analysis. What do you learn about Maycomb and what is your opinion about what is happening. Remember to include page numbers and quotation marks. Your analytical responses should be about 5-8 sentences.
This is one quote that said there was once kkk in Maycomb "Way back about nineteen twenty there was a klan, but it was political organization more than anything," pg.167. Then there is another quote in pg.155 "Atticus, it's alright to be soft-hearted,you're an easy man, but you have a daughter to think of. A daughter who's growing up." here the aunt doesn't want Scout to grow up with Calpurnia. Then there is the quote in pg.164 "In Maycomb, grown men stood outside in the front yard for only two reasons:death and politics." in this quote they are talking about a group of men come to Atticus because of the case of the rape. In Maycomb there is a lot of racism but good thing there is still some innocence in kids. In this quote Scout makes a whole group ashamed with her innocence "The men were all looking at me, some had their mouths half-open."pg.174.
ReplyDelete"'There's his chillun,' or 'Yonder's some Finches.'"
ReplyDeleteThe people of the county judge Atticus and his family because he is defending Tom Robinson but Scout doesn't completely understand why they do that. Atticus is trying to protect his children from knowing too much of what is going on because he knows it will affect them is a huge way. The fact that Jem and Scout would not understand affects the story as well because it gives the children a sense of innocence and creates a better plot. I think that Atticus is trying to do what is best for his children without causing them to think he is leaving them in the dark. Atticus' character is, in my opinion, the most interesting one in the story.
"I don't look for any trouble, but I can't guarantee there wont be any...." the trial is close and people are more prejudiced so they start becoming reckless and the men of Maycomb county are concerned that someone might try to get ahold of Tom Robinson before it happens. I think this is somewhat of a foreshadow of the problems that will arise with trial getting closer. I think that Atticus will have to face more obstacles and bad intentions from other people as the story develops further. The town seems to me like it is a town that is clearly separated into two groups; those who want equal rights and those who want blacks to be given less than whites. I am starting to understand the way that Atticus thins better because he is a character that is affecting the story is a great way and this makes the story even more interesting.
"You know what we want," another man said,"Get aside from the door, Mr. Finch."
The men who went to Atticus' home were right to be concerned because some of the men who disagree with giving Tom a fair trial showed up at the country jail. They are the men who are so close minded that they think blaming everything of blacks is the right thing to do. Atticus stands his ground as those men ask him to move aside and let them take Tom with them because he believes in Tom and knows that moving aside would be the wrong thing to do. I agree with Atticus on standing his ground although I probably would not have let those men touch Jem. I do see why he didn't do anything, because he already had a problem with these men and he didn't want the children to be hurt.
1.'"They c'n go loose and rape the countryside for all'em who run this country care," was one observation we met head on from a skinny gentleman when he passed us."' This quote shows us that one little action that does not satisfy the people in the country can change their opinion about you. They are mad because Atticus is defending a negro and they are against that. They believe whites and Negroes should be treated differently not exactly the same. They don't see the equality among themselves as they are all human. I think this is unfair how they talk about him when he just doing his job of defending innocent people. I think its even more unfair that they include his children in this mess when they don't really understand what exactly is happening.
ReplyDelete2.'"And don't try to get around it. You've got to face it sooner or later and it might as well be tonight. we don't need her now".'-- This quote shows us that Aunt Alexandra judges Calpurnia. She doesn't want Calpurnia to live in Atticus's house anymore because she is black. I think this is unfair to Calpurnia because different colors of skin don't really make a difference between humans but apparently to them it is a huge differentiation. I think its fair for Atticus to defend Calpurnia since she has been almost like part of the family for years and her past members of her family have been too.
3.'Way back about nineteenth century there was a Klan, but it was a political organization more than anything. Besides, they couldn't find anybody to scare'. This quote shows us that there was once a group that discriminated people. This group was formed as they had the same similarity of disliking colored people. In the book, Atticus says that they are more likely not to come anymore but who knows? what if they did? I think that the group that acts like KKK's are the people of Maycomb country. They are acting unfair to colored people and the people involved with colored people.
"They c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all 'em who run this county care". A random man says this as Jem and Scout walk by, which shows how hateful people in Mayacomb can be."You've got everything to lose,Atticus. I mean everything." Mr. Link Deas just summed up what the entire town thinks of Atticus defending a black man in that sentence. " You know what we want," another man said." "Get aside from the door Mr. Finch." The fact that people in Mayacomb assemble a mob to possibly kill a man just for his skin color speaks volumes for Mayacomb.
ReplyDelete"Ku Klux got after some Catholics one time." The Ku Klux Klan tried to target people of a different race or ethnicity. They would even target those who tried to assist people of a different race. they wanted to be dominant to those they considered "low-lifes". others who disagreed with the actions of the Ku Klux Klan would take action and try to preserve some freedom for the African Americans. Still, the Ku Klux Klan manged to kill many African Americans."We don't need her now." Aunt Alexandera beleives that Calpurnia is not needed in the house anymore, and is only causing their life to get harder. She thinks that releiving Calpurnia of her duty will benefit all of them, but she doesn't realize that Calpurnia is one of the most important people in the house. So Alexandera is making this judgement to quickly to think of the consequences. She is somewhat of a role model for Scout, and disciplines both scout and jem when needed. So without her, it would be chaos.
ReplyDelete"Ain't so high high and mighty, are you!" Pg. 157
ReplyDeleteScout words were filled with passions. She thinks that white people are all that, and black people were inferior. She wants equality for black people. No one should have better treatment just by the color of their skin. Thats what she believes.
"you are not scared of that crowd, are you?" Pg. 165
Atticus is judging someone for another person. I guess in maycomb everyone judges other. It a human nature, and nothing wrong with that i suppose. There is a limit on how much people can criticize others. Also knowing when to stop doing it.
"She almost said Atticus was disgracin' the family. Scout...I'm scared." Pg. 167
Jem was concern about how Atticus might get hurt. I think Jem thinks the KKK might be the one to hurt Atticus. Since the KKK is really racist against the blacks. I don't think they are going to do any physical harm. If they do they will get arrested and be exposed to everyone in town.
3 prejudice quotes"
ReplyDelete1."They c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all 'em who run this county care," was one obscure observation we meet head on from a skinny gentlemen when he passed us".page 153
My response: Atticus's job to defend Tom Robinson has taken a tole on the people of Maycomb. They are beginning to view the Finch family in disgust.Like they are people who approve of rape. from this i learn that people in Maycomb are stubborn. They are a difficult group of people to deal with and have an incurable way of thinking.I think that people, although they dont approve of Atticus defending an African American rape victim, that they should take out their anger on his kids. They shouldnt even take ander out on Atticus or the Finches in general. Atticus is just doing his job and what he thinks is right. He knows in his heart that Tom Robinson is being accused of a crime he didnt commit, he is just a victim of racial injustice.
2."...you've got to do something about her[Calpurnia]," Aunty was saying. "You've let things go on too long, Atticus, too long."page 155
My response:Aunt Alexanda knows nothing about Calpurnia yet she choses to acknowledged her in a way that makes her seem like a bad person based on just the color of her skin. Calpurnia has just been the weight off of Atticus's wings. She has been there for him and the kids through thick and thin and has only done good for his family. But Aunt Alexandra, as stated in paraghraph 13 is an "incurable gossip". She will point out the wrong in other groups before hers, which is exactly what she is doing to Calpurnia. Its exactly what the whole Maycomb county is doing to the African American community.
3."I told him in detail about our trip to church with Calpurnia. Atticus seemed to enjoy it,but Aunt Alexandra, who was sitting in a corner quietly sewing, put down her embroidery and stared at us.
My response:You can tell by Aunt Alexandra's actions that she doesn't like the idea of The Finch children hanging around colored folks.
Scouts innocence Quote:
1. "...Which reminded me i had a question for Atticus. 'whats rape?' I asked him that night.
My response:People have been accusing the Finches of rape since they chose to defend Tom Robinsons case. But by the quote above you can clearly see the innocence of the finch children through Scouts quote. She has no idea what rape is or might be.
another quote that shows Scouts innocence is on page 175-" 'Well Atticus i was just saying to Me. Cunningham that entailments are bad an' all that, but you said not to worry, it takes a long time sometimes... that you all'd ride it out together...' I was slowly drying up, wondering what idiocy I had committed. Entailment seemed all right for living room talk.
"Which reminded me that i had a question to ask Atticus. "Whats rape?" i asked him that night"pg 153. This shows that scout is innocent because she doesnt know what rape means she still doesnt have that knowledge to understand. Therefore she didnt knew what the guy had done to be sent to jail.
ReplyDelete"They c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all 'em who run this county care" This shows that people dont like the fact that Atticus is defending Tom Because he is not white but colored skin.
" I told him in detail about our trip to church with Calpurnia. Atticus seemed to enjoy it, but Aunt Alexandra, who was sitting in a corner quietly sewing put down her embroidery and stared at us"
This shows that aunt alexandra doesnt like that they went to Calpurnia's church probably because in that church only colored people went.
" Atticus ill go next sunday if its all right, Can i? Cal said shes'd come get me if you were off in the car. You may not. Aunt Alexandra said it.
This shows that she is just saying no because she doesnt like Calpurnia because of her race she has never talked to her or try to know her . Aunt Alexandra is racist toward colored people.
Maycomb folks are still racist. It hasnt changed that much just that know there is no more slavery other than that people still dont like each other because of there color.
-----> Quote number one: "....."there's his chillun," or "yonder's some finches."turning to face our accusers, we would we would see only a couple of farmers studying the enema bags in the mayco drugstore window ........ "they c'n go loose and rape all'em who run this country care ...." Pg.153
ReplyDelete-----> Quote number two: "..."you were coming from calpurnia's church that Sunday?"jem said "yessum, she took us." i remembered something. "and she promised me i could come out to her house some afternoon. ........ "you may not" said aunt Alexandria...." Pg.154
-----> Quote number three: "..." you've got to do something about her, aunty was saying. "you've let this go on too long, atticus, too long."" i don't see any harm in letting her go out there.cal'd look after her there as well as she does here"..." Pg.153-155
--------------> RESPONSES :
#1: in quote number one i think the author was trying to show how the people in macomb were being really prejudicial with scout and jem just because they were atticus's children and just because atticus was defending tom Robinson
# 2 AND 3: in both quote number two and quote number three scout is trying to show how her aunt Alexandria, like everyone else in maycomb is very good at prejudice . and because of that , Alexandria doesn't want scout to go to calpurnias house and i think you should get the idea of why she doesn't want scout to go
-------> IS SCOUT TOO INNOCENT TO UNDERSTAND PREJUDICE?
"I don't see any harm in letting her go out there.cal'd look after her there as well as she does here"...who was the "she" they were talking about?my heart sank:me."
i think this quote perfectly shows that scout is in fact too Innocent to realize the reason why her aunt Alexandria doesn't want to allow her to go to calpurnias house.
"And don't try to get around it. You've go to face it sooner or later and it might as well be tonight. We don't need her now" pg.155, i think that Aunt Alexandria thinks that Cal is bad influence on Scout, she thinks that if Scout goes to Calpurina's place she is going to get closer to negro people. Aunt Alexandria dosen't want Scout close to black people and now even less because of what is going on with Tom Robinson.""You know what we want," another man said. "Get aside from the door, Mr. Finch."" pg.172, because of the trial being almost near some people want to like hurt or take Tom Robinson somewhere ,they don't wanna wait and see if Tom Robinson is innocent or not. I think that the people of Maycomb shouldn't do that with the trial getting closer."..movin' him to the county jail tomorrow," Mr. Tate was saying, "I don't look for any trouble, but I can't gurantee there won't be any..." pg. 165, there is people in Maycomb that want to do something because thetrial is getting closer ,and some other people from Maycomb want to move Tom to another jail so there won't be any trouble. "Well, Atticus, I was just saying' to Mr.Cunnihnham that entailments are bad an' all that, but you said not to worry, it take a long time sometimes...that you all'd ride it out together..." i was slowly drying up wondering what idiocy i had commited." pg.175 i think that this shows Scout innocense because she is saying something imporatan but she is like wondering what she said that made them all be surprised.
ReplyDelete1)"Atticus's voice was even:"Alexandra,Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she wants to." Response:Aunt Alexandra doesn't like how Calpurnia ,the family housekeeper is living in their house. The reason she doesn't like Calpurnia is because she is black. She tries to tell Atticus to get rid of Calpurnia but Atticus refuses.Atticus explains to Aunt Alexandra how Calpurnia is important to Scout and Jem. He tells Aunt Alexandra she will have to accept the way things are. This is an example of racial prejudice because Aunt Alexandra is refusing to accept Calpurnia as a family member because she is black.
ReplyDelete2)"They c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all 'em who run this country care," was one obscure observation we met head on from a skinny gentleman when he passed us." Response:Ever since Atticus chose to defend Tom Robinson, everyone in Maycomb is talking bad about the Finches. They feel like the Finches are traitors. People in Maycomb can be really racist and stubborn. Just because Tom Robinson is black, they think he isn't innocent and committed the crime. The people in Maycomb see things base on race and it isn't really fair. This is an example of racial prejudice because people are viewing each other based on race.
3)"Way back about nineteen-twenty there was a Klan, but it was a political organization more than anything." Response:This quote is saying that once there was racial discrimination in Maycomb. The organization was called Ku Klux Klan and once got after Catholics. They compare the Ku Klux Klan to the people in Maycomb. They people in Maycomb views people based on race like the Ku Klux Klan viewed people based on religion. This is an example of racial prejudice because the people in Maycomb are treated differently according to race.
Quote for Scout's innocence:"What's rape?" I asked him that night." Response:Scout is kind of confused about what is going on. People are saying that the Finches are defending Tom Robinson who is accused of rape. The people in Maycomb says things that affects Scout and her innocence. Scout has no idea what rape means. Atticus tells Scout that rape is the "carnal knowledge of a female by force or without consent". She is still innocent because she doesn't know what rape is.
Prejudice 1. "They c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all 'em who run this county care" pg. 153
ReplyDeletePrejudice 2. "Ain't so high and mighty now, are you!" pg. 157
prejudice 3. "Let's leave it at this: you mind Jem whenever he can make you. Fair enough?"
scout innocence: "... You've got to do something about her," Aunty was saying. " You've let things go on too long, Atticus, too long." "I don't see any harm in letting her go out there. Cal'd look after her there as well as she does here." Eventually scout was wondering who was the "her" she wanted to know who were they talking about. pg. 155
all of these three quotes shows prejudice because its showing how they act on a way........
#1. "They c'n go loose and rape up the country side for all of 'em who run this county care," was one obscure information we meet head on from a skinny gentlemen when he passed us."pg.153 This is showing that all the people in Maycomb are pretty mad at Atticus for defending Tom Robinson. Also the people are starting to get disgusted by the Finch family because of this. Even though they are accusing T. Robinson for commiting a crime, Atticus knows for sure that he is a innocent guy and that they only accused him of that crime because he was a darker skin colored than all the other people. The people shouldn't be like this to Atticus because he is only doing his job and he's not harming no one. They should actually help Atticus because he is doing the right thing.
ReplyDelete2. "In Maycomb, grown men stood outside in the front yard for only two reasons: death and politics."Pg 164-165. It is showing that Maycomb people are racist. Exept for the children. It also says that the group of men are coming toward Atticus for the raping situation. And hopefully one day Maycomb county will be racist-free.
3. "She almost said Atticus was disgracin' the family.Scout... I'm scared."pg 167 This is showing that Jem is actually worried that his father might get harmed by some dudes who are racist to black people. And those dudes are probably KKK since they don't like black people. Maybe they will eventually harm Atticus because he is helping out T. Robinson. And if they do then probably Atticus will stop defending him and the Maycomb county will be happy.
1.).'"And don't try to get around it. You've got to face it sooner or later and it might as well be tonight. we don't need her now".'--aunt Alexandria is judging Calpurina because of the color of her skin, and i think that's not fair.
ReplyDelete2.)"you all were were coming back from calpurnia's church that Sunday?" this quote is showing how aunt Alexandria is beginning to get mad and how its obvious that she doesn't like Calpurina because of her skin color.you can tell that aunt Alexandria doesn't want scout to go to calpurnia's church again.
3.)they c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all 'em who run this country care,"was one obscure observation we met head on from a skinny gentleman when he passed us. in this quote the people are being very mean and prejudice because of the whole tom problem. the people are taking the finch as disgust.
"they c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all 'em who run this country care" pg153 - the people of Maycomb are getting mad at Atticus because he is defending a colored person who committed rape. Atticus is just doing what he thinks is right.
ReplyDelete"you all were coming back from Calpurnia's church that sunday" pg 154 - at this point aunt Alexandra was getting mad. she doesn't like colored people.
" besides," Atticus was saying," your're not scared of that crowd, are you?" pg165 - the people are judging people for other people without knowing anything about them.
"which reminded me that i had a question of Atticus. whats rape?"
this shows that scout is innocent. she is too small to know what is going on and what really id happening
1. "I told him in detail about our trip to church with Calpurnia. Atticus seemed to enjoy it, but Aunt Alexandra, who was sitting in a corner quietly sewing, put down her embroidery and stared at us" Pg.154 Aunt Alexandra shows that she doesnt like the idea that Scout and Jem hang out with black people at church. This shows prejudice because she thinks that black people are bad and that they are dangerous to be around with
ReplyDelete2. "...you've got to do something about her," Aunty was saying ."You,ve let things go on too long." Pg.155 Aunt Alexandra prejudged Calpurnia when she said that she doesnt know how to take care of Scout and that she is the reason that Scout is acting that way.
3."They c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all'em who run this country care," was one obscure observation we met head from a skinny gentleman when he passed us" Pg.153 All the people in Maycomb are prejudging the finches just because atticus is trying to defend tom Robinson and the people dont even know if Tom Robinson is guilty or not and this is prejudgement
"What's rape?" i asked him that night" Pg.153 This quote shows Scout's innocence about the case of tom Robinson because she doesnt even know what he has been accused of.
Quote # 1: "There's his chillun", or "Yonder's some Finches"
ReplyDeleteThis quote is discriminating or judging the Finch family because Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. I don't agree how the people are acting and treating the Finch family just because he's defending a person and only care what race and color the person is, that is ignorance.
Quote # 2: "They c'n go loose and rape up the countryside for all em' who run this country care"
This quote is directed to Atticus and its defender Tom Robinson. Since he's accused of rape, they don't agree that Atticus is defending someone of that accusation and they also base it because of Tom's color. When the guy says "They c'n go loose and rape" he's trying to say that every other guy these days can go and rape some girl and its still going to be protected like Atticus is doing with Tom because they think he's not innocent.
Quote # 3: "...you've got to do something about her," Aunt was saying. "You've let things go on too long Atticus, too long"
This quote Aunt Alexandra is talking about Calpurnia she responds like this when she hears Scout say that she went with Calpurnia to church. Alexandra is being "races" because she only cares about the Family's dignity how it looks she sees bad example when the kids hang out with Calpurnia just because of her color. Aunt Alexandra is a following what the other people at Maycomb are doing.
Scout's Innocence: "I don't see any harm in letting her go out there. Cal'd look after her there as well as she does here" Who was the "her" they were talking about? My heart sank: me.
This quote shows Scout innocence that she doesn't know what is going on in the world around her.
1. "They c'n go loose and rape up the country side for all of 'em who run this county care...". This is referring to Tom Robinson's case where he allegedly raped one of the Ewell's daughter and also that all African-Americans would rape someone or do something equally as bad.
ReplyDelete2. "There's his chillun," or, "Yonder's Finches.". The people are calling Scout and Jem that because Atticus was defending Tom Robinson and the townspeople do not approve of Atticus' decision to help an African-American.
3. "Yessum, and she promised me I could come out to her house some afternoon. Atticus, I'll go next Sunday if that's all right, can I? Cal said she'd come get me if you were off in the car." "You may not". Aunt Alexandra didn't want Scout to go with Calpurnia because she was an African-American and she thought that she was a bad influence because of the same reason.
1. "They c'n loose and rape up the countryside for all'em who run this county care," pg.153 shows prejudice because they don't like how Atticus is trying to defend Tom Robinson.
ReplyDelete2. "You all were coming back from Calpurnia's church that Sunday?" pg.154 shows how Alexandria doesn't like that they go to the church because of their skin color.
3. "In Maycomb, grown men stood outside in the front yard for only two reasons; death and politics." pg.164-165 This quote shows how people discriminate others just because of their skin color and don't care about others.
